I recently completed dermaplaning training with Cliniva, and from the very first point of contact, the communication was excellent. Nicky, my trainer, was incredibly helpful and provided clear, detailed information regarding the venue, costs, and the online training that needed to be completed before the practical session. I arrived an hour early, having made good time travelling from the High Peak in Derbyshire. Nicky and her team gave me a warm welcome, offered me a drink, and showed me to the restroom. She also kindly informed her client that I had arrived early, and we then began the one-to-one introduction to dermaplaning. Before we started, I was asked if it was okay to take photos and videos for promotional purposes, which I was happy to agree to. Once the theory portion was complete, Nicky introduced me to my model and guided me step by step through the practical side of the training. She provided clear instructions and was consistently patient, supportive, and encouraging throughout. Once she assessed me as competent, she also covered the practical aspects of setting up — including guidance on where to order the necessary equipment. I can absolutely see why Cliniva is an award-winning training centre. The day ran smoothly from start to finish, and I left feeling confident and well-prepared in my new skills. Thank you, Nicky, and the Cliniva team, for such a professional and positive experience!

My first trip to see Claire today for a dermaplane, as I use BeautyWise next door for my lashes etc. I was looked after so well. Not just your standard treatment but with that little bit extra - I left feeling very pampered! Skin feels super soft, smooth and clean! Additionally Clare gave me advice on some other beauty questions I had - all very helpful! Thank you!

FAQs

Dermaplaning facial is a non-invasive exfoliation treatment that uses a sterile surgical scalpel to gently scrape away the top layer of dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the face. The practitioner holds the skin taut and uses light, feathering strokes at a 45-degree angle to remove the outermost layer of skin and hair, revealing smoother, brighter skin underneath. The treatment is completely painless when performed correctly, with most people describing it as a gentle scraping sensation. Dermaplaning can address concerns including dull, rough skin texture; uneven skin tone; fine vellus facial hair; clogged pores; and can improve the absorption and effectiveness of skincare products. It also creates a smooth canvas for makeup application. The treatment typically takes 30 to 45 minutes and can be performed as a standalone service or combined with other facial treatments like masks, serums or chemical peels. Unlike some exfoliation methods, dermaplaning is suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin and pregnant women. There is no downtime, and skin looks immediately brighter, smoother and more radiant after treatment. Results last approximately 3 to 4 weeks as skin naturally renews and hair grows back.

Prices for Dermaplaning Facial vary between clinics across the UK and depend on factors such as treatment area, skin condition, number of sessions and practitioner experience. The price of Dermaplaning Facial typically ranges from around £50 to £120 depending on complexity and whether add-on products or serums are included. If you're comparing how much Dermaplaning Facial costs, remember that clinic reputation and a personalised treatment plan can affect the final cost. For a clear sense of the cost of Dermaplaning Facial overall, ask clinics what is included in their fee (consultation, aftercare, products). You can find the exact, up-to-date price for this treatment in the catalogue

Most people should get dermaplaning facials every 3 to 4 weeks, which aligns with the natural skin cell turnover cycle. This frequency allows enough time for the skin to complete its renewal process and for the vellus hair to grow back to a length suitable for effective removal. Getting dermaplaning more frequently than every 3 weeks can potentially irritate the skin, disrupt the skin barrier or cause sensitivity, as you would be removing skin that has not had adequate time to regenerate. However, the ideal frequency depends on several individual factors including your skin type, with oilier or thicker skin sometimes tolerating more frequent treatments; your skin concerns and treatment goals; how quickly your facial hair grows back; your skin's sensitivity and healing capacity; and whether you are combining dermaplaning with other treatments. Some people with very sensitive skin may prefer treatments every 5 to 6 weeks to allow more recovery time between sessions. For maintenance and optimal skin health, monthly dermaplaning is ideal for most people. You can also opt for dermaplaning before special events for an immediate glow and smooth makeup application. It is important to be consistent rather than sporadic with treatments for cumulative benefits. Your practitioner can assess your individual skin and recommend the most appropriate treatment schedule. Always ensure adequate time passes between sessions to allow proper skin regeneration and avoid over-exfoliation.

Dermaplaning is often performed as the first step of a comprehensive facial treatment, so yes, dermaplaning before other facial steps is not only acceptable but actually beneficial. Removing the layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair through dermaplaning creates optimal conditions for the rest of the facial by allowing serums, masks and other products to penetrate more effectively into the skin; improving product absorption and efficacy; creating a clean, smooth surface for subsequent treatments; and enhancing the overall results of the facial. Many facial protocols specifically incorporate dermaplaning at the beginning, followed by steps like cleansing, extractions if needed, targeted serums, masks, massage and moisturiser with SPF. However, timing considerations with certain treatments are important: dermaplaning should not be done immediately before or after chemical peels, as this could cause excessive exfoliation and irritation, though light enzyme peels are sometimes acceptable; avoid dermaplaning before or after more aggressive treatments like microneedling, laser therapy or strong resurfacing procedures, typically waiting at least 2 weeks between such treatments; and if you have active breakouts, open wounds, or irritated skin, dermaplaning should be postponed. If you are having dermaplaning combined with other facial treatments, your practitioner will determine the appropriate sequence and ensure all steps are compatible and safe. Always inform your aesthetician about any recent facial treatments, procedures or products you are using so they can plan the most appropriate and safe treatment protocol. When performed in the correct sequence with compatible treatments, dermaplaning enhances the overall facial experience and results.

No, dermaplaning does not increase facial hair. This is a common myth that has been definitively debunked by dermatologists and scientific evidence. Dermaplaning only removes hair at the surface level and does not affect the hair follicle, which is located much deeper in the skin. The number of hair follicles you have is determined genetically and established before birth, and cannot be increased by shaving, cutting or dermaplaning. What dermaplaning does is remove the fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) that grows on your face. When this hair grows back, it may temporarily feel slightly stubbly because it has been cut with a straight edge rather than naturally tapering at the tip, giving the perception of coarseness. However, the hair is exactly the same type, thickness and quantity as before - it just has a blunt end that will taper naturally over time with normal growth. The hair will not grow back darker, thicker, more abundant or in greater density. If you notice what seems like more hair after dermaplaning, it is likely that you are simply more aware of the hair that was always there but is now more visible to you because you are paying closer attention. Dermaplaning has been used safely for decades in medical and aesthetic settings without causing increased hair growth. The treatment removes dead skin and vellus hair temporarily, allowing them to grow back naturally at the same rate, texture and quantity as before treatment.

No, dermaplaning does not remove facial hair permanently. The treatment only removes hair at the surface level by cutting it with a surgical scalpel, similar to shaving. The hair follicle, which is located deeper in the skin, remains completely intact and unaffected by dermaplaning. Because the follicle is not damaged or destroyed, the hair will grow back, typically becoming noticeable again within 2 to 4 weeks depending on your individual hair growth rate. Dermaplaning removes vellus hair, the fine, light, soft hair often called peach fuzz that naturally covers most of the face. This hair will continue to grow back in its normal cycle after treatment. If you want permanent or long-term hair removal, you would need to consider treatments that target the hair follicle itself, such as laser hair removal, which uses light energy to damage follicles and reduce hair growth over time through multiple sessions; electrolysis, which destroys individual follicles with electrical current and is the only truly permanent hair removal method; or intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, which works similarly to laser. However, these methods are typically used for darker, coarser terminal hair rather than the fine vellus hair that dermaplaning removes. The temporary nature of hair removal with dermaplaning is actually an advantage for most people, as vellus hair serves protective functions and removing it permanently is neither necessary nor desirable for facial aesthetics. Dermaplaning provides temporary smoothness and hair removal that naturally renews, allowing you to maintain the treatment as desired without permanent changes to your hair growth patterns.

No, your facial hair will not grow back thicker after dermaplaning. This is one of the most persistent myths about dermaplaning and shaving in general, but it has been thoroughly debunked by dermatologists and scientific research. The misconception arises from the fact that when hair is cut with a sharp blade, it is severed at the skin's surface with a blunt edge rather than the naturally tapered tip that develops with uncut hair. This blunt end can temporarily feel coarser or stubbly when it first grows back, creating the illusion that the hair is thicker. However, as the hair continues to grow, it will naturally taper and feel exactly as it did before dermaplaning. The thickness, colour, growth rate and texture of hair are determined by the hair follicle deep within the skin and your genetic makeup, not by what happens at the surface level. Dermaplaning does not and cannot penetrate deep enough to affect the follicle or change the characteristics of hair growth. Multiple studies have confirmed that shaving or cutting hair at the surface does not alter the follicle's behaviour or the properties of the hair it produces. If you are concerned about stubble or the initial feel of regrowing hair, understand that this is temporary and the hair will return to its normal texture within a growth cycle. The vellus hair removed by dermaplaning is fine and light, and it will grow back as fine and light vellus hair, not thicker terminal hair. Your facial hair will grow back exactly as it was before treatment - no thicker, darker or coarser.

Yes, dermaplaning facial is generally considered safe during pregnancy and is one of the few aesthetic treatments that pregnant women can safely enjoy. Unlike many skincare treatments that use chemicals, active ingredients, heat or other elements that may be contraindicated during pregnancy, dermaplaning is purely mechanical exfoliation that only affects the outermost layer of dead skin cells and does not involve any products or processes that could affect your pregnancy. The treatment does not use chemicals that could be absorbed into the bloodstream, heat or electrical energy that could be concerning, lasers or light-based devices, or injectable products. It simply uses a sterile surgical scalpel to gently scrape away dead skin and vellus hair. This makes dermaplaning an excellent option for pregnant women who want to maintain their skincare routine and address common pregnancy-related skin concerns like dullness, dryness or uneven texture. However, a few considerations apply: pregnancy hormones can make skin more sensitive, so inform your practitioner that you are pregnant so they can be extra gentle; avoid dermaplaning if you are experiencing pregnancy-related skin conditions like melasma or increased sensitivity until you discuss with your practitioner; always ensure the treatment is performed by a qualified professional in a clean, safe environment; and confirm that any products used before or after dermaplaning, such as cleansers, serums or moisturisers, are pregnancy-safe and free from ingredients like retinoids or certain acids. Most practitioners are happy to treat pregnant clients with dermaplaning and can adjust their approach and products accordingly. If you have any concerns or pregnancy complications, check with your midwife or doctor before having any aesthetic treatments, though dermaplaning is generally very low-risk.

Before dermaplaning facial, people typically have concerns such as dull, lacklustre skin with a buildup of dead cells; rough or uneven skin texture; fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) covering the face; makeup that does not apply smoothly or sits on top of skin texture; skincare products that do not seem to absorb well; or simply wanting a brighter, more radiant complexion. The skin may look tired, feel rough to the touch and lack the smooth, glowing appearance of well-exfoliated skin. After dermaplaning facial, the results are immediately visible: the skin looks significantly brighter, more radiant and glowing, with improved light reflection creating a luminous appearance; texture is noticeably smoother and softer to the touch, feeling like silk; the face appears more even-toned and refined; fine vellus hair has been removed, creating a perfectly smooth surface; makeup applies flawlessly and looks more polished, sitting smoothly rather than catching on texture or hair; skincare products absorb more effectively into the newly revealed skin; and the overall complexion appears fresher, more youthful and healthier. The improvement is instant and dramatic for such a simple, non-invasive treatment. There is no downtime, no redness or irritation (when performed correctly), and you can immediately return to normal activities, apply makeup and enjoy your smooth, glowing skin. The results typically last 3 to 4 weeks, as this is how long it takes for dead skin cells to accumulate again and vellus hair to grow back to noticeable length. With regular monthly treatments, the cumulative benefits include improved skin texture over time, better product efficacy and maintained smoothness and radiance. Many people notice that their skin looks noticeably more youthful and healthy with consistent dermaplaning maintenance. Your practitioner can show you before and after photos from their own work demonstrating the immediate brightening, smoothing and glow that dermaplaning provides. The treatment is particularly popular before special events because of the instant, visible improvement and the perfect canvas it creates for makeup application. Dermaplaning provides one of the most immediate and satisfying aesthetic results of any non-invasive facial treatment.
